The 1st Infantry Division is one of those legendary military outfits that seems to always be in the forefront of the fray. The Big Red One saw action in many critical moments in history, both in World War I and World War II. Most recently, the 1st ID took part in the Battles of Najaf and Second Fallujah in 2004.
In December, 1944, the 1st ID found itself right in the path of the crack 1st SS Panzer Grenadier Division at the outset of the Battle of the Bulge. These five photos are representative of what these proud Americans endured as they held fast on the north shoulder of the Bulge and stopped the German panzers cold.
