I was quite fortunate to hitch a ride with Captain Dan Lauer and the rest of the Big Windy crews from Shank as they headed back to Germany. We flew from Shank to Kandahar after linking up with another Big Windy det at another FOB. The Big Windy guys are top drawer, a bit unorthodox and tons of fun. They rolled around Shank in a Soviet Jeep Captain Lauer, Hunter Lescoe and some Czechs rebuilt. They bedazzled their tent with pink flamingos, gnomes, Halloween spiders and political signs. Their motto, "Size does matter," never fails to crack me up (which I guess says a lot about my sense of humor). Riding with them on my first leg home was truly memorable, and already I miss Sully, O'Neil (dude--does your high school know where you are??), Dan and the rest of Big Windy crews. Great aviators, great people--and great Americans.
